TORONTO — The Student Association of George Brown College is reminding its members it offers free legal counsel.

“Early this morning at St. James Park, peaceful Occupy protesters saw an extreme show of force,” said Cindy Brownlee, director of education and equity for the Student Association of George Brown College.

“Hundreds of officers and City of Toronto workers converged on the park and started tearing down tents and signage and arresting protesters who were unwilling to leave.”

The park is one street west of George Brown’s St. James campus.

“St. James Park is close to our downtown campus, and we know students at George Brown have been heavily involved in the Occupy movement,” said Brownlee.

“Our message to our members is we support you, and if you have been detained, we’re here to provide you with the legal aid you may need.”

The Student Association offers free legal counsel to all full-time students. William Reid, the Student Association’s lawyer, can be reached at 416-415-5000 ext. 2845 or 6314 or by email at wreid@georgebrown.ca.

Press Release: Student Association Condemns Fee Increase for International Students

TORONTO — The Student Association of George Brown College condemns the college’s tuition fee increase for international and ESL students.

“Ontario students pay the highest tuition fees in the country, and international students pay even higher fees,” said Cindy Brownlee, director of education and equity at the Student Association.

While domestic student tuition fees are provincially regulated, international student fees are determined by each post-secondary institution.

International students are, more and more, subsidizing education for domestic students as the federal and provincial governments claw back funding.

During the election, the Liberal government made a promise to drop fees by 30 per cent. However, international students are ineligible for the rebate.

“There are myths international students come from wealthy families and can pay whatever we charge. But the majority of students who access our food bank are international students,” Brownlee said.

“It’s really unfortunate we’re putting education further and further out of reach for people who want to contribute to our economy.”

The Student Association’s current campaign is Drop Fees!, encouraging students to sign petitions for lower tuition fees and helping students visualize how much their collective debt weighs and stands.

In conjunction with the Canadian Federation of Students, is having a rally on Dec.5 to lower tuition fees. Students can meet at the St. James and Casa Loma campuses at 9 a.m. for breakfast and will then march to Queen’s Park.
